How do Knee Ligament Injuries Happen?

These happen as a result of trauma, either a sudden twisting injury or change of direction, e.g. while skiing, playing football or tennis. The most common ligaments to be injured are the MCL and ACL and they frequently occur together with a tear of the medial meniscus (cartilage). A ligament sprain will take 4-6 weeks to recover with physiotherapy but a complete rupture will often require surgery to repair it depending on your age and level of activity.

What are Knee Ligaments?

Ligaments are tough bands of tissue which attach the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia and fibula (shin bones) to add strength and stability to the knee. They are not particularly flexible and so when stretched they stay stretched and when overstretched they can rupture or snap. The four main knee ligaments are the medial and lateral collateral ligaments (MCL and LCL) and the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments (ACL and PCL).
