Ankle Sprain

Sprained Ankle

A sprained ankle is a very common injury. It occurs when the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched or torn. It usually happens very suddenly e.g. when walking on uneven ground or landing awkwardly when running or jumping. The foot rolls inwards as the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are weaker than those on the inside.

What can Petersfield Physio do to help a Sprained Ankle?

The RICE regime – rest, ice, compression and elevation, will speed up the healing process of the damaged ligaments. We can also use Kinesiology tape to help swelling and support the ankle, electrotherapy such as ultrasound and interferential to reduce inflammation. Mobilisations and stretches will restore full movement and specific exercises to improve strength and proprioception will improve balance and prevent you from re-injuring your ankle.
