Knee Ligament Injuries
Ligaments are tough bands of tissue that hold bones together at a joint. The knee ligaments are particularly vulnerable to injury, particularly with sports such as skiing, rugby or football. They can range from a minor tear to a full rupture. The anterior cruciate ligament or ACL is the most important ligament responsible for the stability of the knee and, unfortunately, usually completely ruptures when it is overstretched.
What can Petersfield Physio do to help Knee Ligament Injuries?
It is vitally important to regain stability of the knee joint after a ligament tear. We recommend the RICE regime initially followed by mobilisations and stretches to restore full movement in the joint. Strengthening, stabilising and proprioception or balance exercises will ensure that the knee heals with full stability. If the ligament has completely ruptured and needs surgery, physiotherapy is very important to regain function in the knee, which will take several months.
