It is an inflammatory condition of the ball and socket joint where the capsule tightens causing a marked restriction in the range of movement. \u00a0A true frozen shoulder is actually quite rare and difficult to treat.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;How does it occur?&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;18&#8243; text_text_color=&#8221;#7d78b9&#8243; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>How Does Frozen Shoulder Occur?<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The causes are not clearly defined. It can occur after a fracture, trauma or surgery but often occurs spontaneously. It is more common in women than men and between the ages of 40 \u2013 60. It progresses through 3 stages, usually lasting 1-2 years.<\/p>\n<p>The initial \u201cFreezing\u201d stage is very painful and the joint starts to stiffen. It is often painful at night, preventing the sufferer from sleeping well. In the 2nd\u00a0or \u201cFrozen\u201d stage the shoulder movement becomes very restricted but the pain reduces. Physiotherapy becomes much more appropriate during the \u201cThawing\u201d phase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specific Exercises \u2013 <\/strong>specific stretches to maintain and improve the shoulder range of movement and strengthening exercises to correct abnormal movement patterns and restore function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soft tissue Release \u2013 <\/strong>to limit muscle spasm in the painful muscles surrounding the shoulder<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joint Mobilisations \u2013 <\/strong>to increase the range of movement and decrease pain in the shoulder joint.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Rotator cuff disorders&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;18&#8243; text_text_color=&#8221;#7d78b9&#8243; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Rotator Cuff Disorders<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The rotator cuff is a group of 4 muscles which surround the shoulder helping to keep it stable. As the shoulder is a complex and unstable joint the rotator cuff has a vital role in normal movement and function. Shoulder instability can lead to subluxation (partial dislocation). It will then be immobilised in a sling for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isometric Strengthening Exercises \u2013 <\/strong>to maintain muscle strength while the joint is healing<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gentle Mobilising Exercises \u2013 <\/strong>to restore mobility once the sling is removed<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strengthening and Proprioception Exercises \u2013 <\/strong>a graduated programme of specialised exercises to improve strength and stability in the joint.
