Sometimes we know there\u2019s a problem and we get treatment, but all too often, we live with it, putting up with limited mobility and accepting that we can\u2019t be as agile and active as we once were. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With proper treatment, a frozen shoulder can be a temporary condition, but without care, it can become permanent. That\u2019s why I want to write this month to highlight the condition, its symptoms and explain what you can do about it so that it doesn\u2019t stop you enjoying a pain-free and active life.<\/span>\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Causes Header&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;20px&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#7d78b9&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;25px|||&#8221;]\r\n\r\nWhat causes a frozen shoulder?\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adhesive capsulitis, or f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rozen shoulder, is a blanket term for a stiff shoulder and can have a variety of different causes, including injury and long-term illness. It is the result of inflammation, scarring, thickening or shrinkage of the muscle and connective tissue that surrounds the shoulder joint.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, frozen shoulder goes through three phases \u2013 the \u201cfreezing\u201d phase, which is very painful, the \u201cfrozen\u201d phase where movement becomes restricted and the \u201cthawing\u201d phase during which the shoulder recovers.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any injury to the shoulder can leave you susceptible to frozen shoulder, however, some of the most common causes are:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tendinitis (inflamed tendon)<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bursitis (swelling or irritation of the bursa, the fluid-filled sac which acts as a cushion between bones, muscles and tendons)<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotator-cuff injury. The rotator-cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it can occur for no apparent reason, becoming a \u201ctrue\u201d frozen shoulder which will resolve within 18 months to two years &#8211; a long time!<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Diabetes Header&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;20px&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#7d78b9&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;25px|||&#8221;]\r\n\r\nDiabetes and frozen shoulder\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who suffer from diabetes or chronic inflammatory arthritis also have a higher risk of developing a frozen shoulder. Other factors that can lead to the condition include:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest or breast surgery<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stroke<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long term immobility of the shoulder<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important for physiotherapists to know the cause or a patient\u2019s frozen shoulder, in order to treat it properly.<\/span>\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Symptoms Header&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;20px&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#7d78b9&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;25px|||&#8221;]\r\n\r\nFrozen shoulder symptoms \u2013 what to look out for\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen shoulder isn\u2019t always associated with pain because initial pain and tenderness caused by an injury may resolve itself, but it can still leave a shoulder with a limited range of motion, making it difficult to spot. That\u2019s why the most important symptom of a frozen shoulder is a limited range of motion.<\/span>\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Treatment Header&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;20px&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#7d78b9&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;25px|||&#8221;]\r\n\r\nTreatment for frozen shoulder\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most treatments for frozen shoulder starts with an intense course of anti-inflammatory medicine alongside some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.petersfield-physio-clinic.co.uk\/treatments-services\/treatments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical therapy exercises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> given by your physiotherapist to strengthen and repair your shoulder.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to warm your shoulder up before stretching it, so take a warm shower or bath for 10 to 15 minutes before you start stretching.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>The Pendulum stretch<\/b>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relax both shoulders and lean over so that the affected arm hangs down freely<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swing your arm gently in circles<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat 10 times a day. As symptoms improve, increase the diameter of the circle or add some light weights<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<b>Towel Stretch<\/b>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold one end of a hand towel (approx. 3ft long) behind your back and grab the opposite end with your other hand<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With your good arm, pull upwards to stretch the affected shoulder<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat 10 to 20 times a day<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<b>Cross Body reach<\/b>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can sit or stand for this stretch<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With your good arm, lift the affected arm at the elbow and gently bring it across your body and hold for 15 seconds<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat this stretch 10 to 20 times a day<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are other exercises that will help with more general movement and to strengthen your shoulder once your symptoms begin to improve.<\/span>\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Don&#8217;t Header&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;20px&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#7d78b9&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;25px|||&#8221;]\r\n\r\nDon\u2019t live with a frozen shoulder \u2013 see a physio\r\n\r\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.100&#8243; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221;]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think you may be suffering from a frozen shoulder, please contact your local physiotherapist for a consultation.
