The thigh muscles (quads) attach to the top of the shin\u00a0bone (tibia) through the patella tendon and, if the muscles and tendon are tight, they will pull on the\u00a0bone causing a painful swollen lump just below the kneecap. The pain is aggravated by exercise,\u00a0particularly jumping, kicking and running sports and is eased by rest.<\/p>\n

As this is caused by the muscles being tight during a growth spurt, a good stretching regime is\u00a0essential. We can teach you the right way to stretch and strengthen the leg muscles. It may be\u00a0necessary to avoid playing certain sports for a while so we can advise on alternatives or changes to\u00a0training. Ice over the tender area can help reduce the inflammation.
