The discs sit between the bones (vertebrae) of the spine acting as shock absorbers and allowing movement in the spine. A slipped or prolapsed disc occurs when the gel-like centre of the disc bulges through the outer shell and presses on the nerves around the spine. This causes pain, tingling and\/or numbness in the area where the disc has protruded and often along the length of the nerve. The most common area of a slipped disc is in the lower back<\/a><\/strong> which can lead to back pain and sciatica<\/a><\/strong> but it can also occur in the neck causing arm and hand pain.<\/p>\n

What can Petersfield Physio do to help a Slipped Disc?<\/u><\/p>\n

As with the treatment for lower back pain and sciatica, education is a big part of our treatment plan. Good posture and correct lifting techniques will reduce pressure on the discs. We can also teach you specific core strengthening exercises such as Pilates to support and strengthen your spine and McKenzie exercises to take pressure off the disc. Other treatment techniques may include mobilisations and manual traction.<\/p>\n
