Acupuncture for Pain Relief

Gerry O’Neill is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists and, as such, can use acupuncture for pain relief. She uses a combination of Traditional Chinese and Western acupuncture. She can also use cosmetic acupuncture for facial rejuvenation.

The Chinese have used acupuncture for thousands of years to treat many conditions from infertility, pain, menopause symptoms, skin conditions and everything in between. Traditional Chinese acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy, or “life force”, flows through the body in channels called meridians. This life force is known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). Traditional acupuncture practitioners believe that when energy does not flow freely it can cause pain or injury. They believe that acupuncture can restore the flow of Qi by stimulating it at certain points along the meridians and therefore restore health.

Western acupuncture is the use of acupuncture after a medical diagnosis. It is based on evidence that shows that insertion of a fine needle can stimulate nerves under the skin and in muscle tissue.
This results in the body producing pain-relieving substances, such as endorphins. It is likely these substances are responsible for any beneficial effects seen with this form of acupuncture.

Acupuncture for pain relief is particularly helpful for treatment of lower back painosteoarthritis and chronic, traditionally hard to treat conditions such as tennis elbow and Achilles tendinopathy.
